Explaining and Justifying Recommendations in an Agriculture Decision Support System

Agricultural decision support systems are not being readily accepted by all potential users. This paper discusses the reasons for this lack of user acceptance and proposes a method for rectifying this problem. The method is based on the premise that good explanations increase user understanding and acceptance of a system. The method involves building a hybrid decision support system which first interprets the output of a quantitative simulation model and then constructs explanations, which are in turn adapted to the particular user. An initial prototype of the system, known as EXPLAIN, is presented.
